DIY Citrus-Infused Vinegar Cleaner
Whenever I suggest cleaning with vinegar to anyone, they typically turn up their nose and say something along the lines of, “I hate the smell of vinegar!”
And I totally get it. Vinegar is a little (…or a lot) pungent.
However, I have the perfect remedy for that…infuse it with citrus peels!
Infusing the vinegar with citrus peels takes away that rough vinegar smell and replaces it with a fresh, invigorating scent that your nose will thank you for.
Not to mention, the citrus adds some serious cleaning and disinfectant power to your concoction.
While I love the scent of this cleaner, I have to say that the reason I keep making it is because I love reusing and re-purposing things- in this recipe, that would be the citrus peels. Reusing items produces less waste and saves money.
Many citrus cleaner recipes I’ve found on the internet use essential oils. I totally love essential oils, but actually infusing cleaner with the citrus allows the ingredients to completely mix together instead of having the essential oils float on top. This prevents the need to shake the bottle before very use. I have also read that essential oils can ruin spray bottles because they are so potent and break down the plastic.
This natural homemade cleaner could not be any simpler to make. Let’s get started!
Homemade Citrus-Infused Vinegar Cleaner
- Fill a jar with vinegar 2/3 of the way full.
- Throw your citrus peels into the jar as you go. It typically only takes me a few days to fill the jar completely as I use a lot of lemons and oranges.
- Let the citrus peels infuse into the vinegar for at least a week.
- Fill up a spray bottle with one part citrus-infused vinegar, one part water.
- Use as you would any household cleaner.
My absolutely favorite way to make this homemade cleaner is using just orange peels. But you can do any combination you wish! You could get even more creative and infuse herbs, as well, such as basil, cilantro, or sage.
