An easy hummus is must have in your recipe arsenal. If you meal prep, hummus is a great dip to snack on for the week.

If I'm craving something crunchy or savory, hummus is my go-to because of the dipping possibilities! You can dip pita bread or crackers into it, or fresh crisp veggies like cucumbers and carrots. 🥕

Or, eat it by the fistful. I mean that's what my son used to do when he was 2. 😂

Ingredients laid out on a dark surface: A measuring cup with chickpeas, some lemon wedges, cloves of garlic, tahini, and paprika.

Traditional hummus contains a lot of olive oil. There are various you may want to avoid oil, such as dietary restrictions, or perhaps you just don't have any on hand.

Instead of oil, we will simply be using the liquid that comes in a can of chickpeas - otherwise known as aquafaba! Aquafaba is a versatile liquid that can act as an egg replacer in vegan recipes. For example, I used aquafaba as a binder in these meatballs and to help the breadcrumbs stick in my Asparagus Fries recipe.

Aquafaba, when blended or whipped, also becomes super fluffy. I LOVE a fluffy hummus. Zoe's Kitchen, one of my favorite places to eat, has the most divine fluffy hummus. While they probably use some kind of oil to get that texture, I was able to achieve the same light and airy mouth-feel using aquafaba.

So, when you strain out the chickpeas from the can, make sure you are reserving that precious liquid!

    Storage

Fridge: Hummus is best stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3-5 days.

Freezer: You can freeze hummus up to 3-4 months in an airtight container. Put it in the fridge to thaw, and mix well before eating!

    FAQ

    Will Hummus Make Me Gassy?

Like other legumes, chickpeas (A.K.A. garbanzo beans) may cause gas if you are not used to eating them. 💨

If you find that hummus is making you gassy or bloated, try eating just a little at a time. Your stomach will adjust to accommodate your new favorite snack.

Can I Leave the Tahini Out?

Some people may want to skip the tahini if you are following a super low-fat diet or simply don't like the taste. This recipe will still be delicious if you don't add the tahini.

    Adding Other Flavors

You can add spices to your preference. Cumin is a great addition to hummus. More ideas: everything bagel seasoning, chili powder, extra garlic, olives, spinach, etc.

You can even use half chickpeas, half black beans, and some taco seasoning to go for more of a southwest-style oil-free hummus.

I love this recipe and I make a double batch every week! I appreciate the nutritional information at the end of the recipe but it doesn't say how big a serving size is. Can you provide that data point?

Your recipe is good. FYI, traditional hummus does NOT have olive oil or any oil in it. It is made like this with tahini and then, when serving, a little very expensive oil may be drizzled over it.

One way I reduce the gas that can come from garbanzo beans is to peel them. It takes an extra 10 min but so worth it. It also reduces the bulk, so two cans may be needed! I place them in a strainer and use water and my hands to get the easy skins off, then go through them one by one, to get the rest. I allow it to be more of a zen activity and the outcome is remarkable.
