How to Cook with Hemp Seed Oil (+ Recipes)
I often make the bold statement that hemp oil is the new coconut oil. While they both have awesome benefits and are incredibly nourishing in many ways, I find myself reaching for hemp oil far more frequently! I use hemp oil for my skin, for my son's diaper rashes, as a carrier oil for essential oils, and I even cook with it!
I love experimenting with hemp oil and adding it to recipes.
Not only does it taste good, there are many benefits to using and consuming hemp oil.
Why Cook with Hemp Seed Oil?
This oil is incredible for our health in so many ways.
Here are some benefits of hemp oil:
- Hemp oil contains sitosterol, which helps reduce cholesterol in our bodies.
- It has the essential fatty acids that help with many skin issues – such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis.
- The properties of hemp oil can help heal skin cells and prevent skin cancer.
- Hemp oil contains Omega-9 and a good ratio of Omega-6 and Omega-3 which helps reduce cholesterol.
Cooking with Hemp Seed Oil:
Really, I use the term "cook" loosely, because you shouldn't actually heat up hemp oil. When hemp oil is brought to a high temperature, it smokes, depletes of nutrients, and the taste changes. A little bit of heat is okay, but only so it's at a luke warm temperature.
However, don't let this disappoint you - there are so many other ways to incorporate hemp oil into your recipes and meals.
You can add hemp seed oil to:
- Salad dressings
- Smoothies
- Hummus
- Protein shakes
- Dips
- Sandwich spreads
- Sauces
- Cold soups
- Pesto
- ...and more! Don't be afraid to get creative.
(P.S. When you're buying hemp oil, make sure it is cold-processed and unrefined. This means it hasn't been messed with and still contains an optimum amount of nutrients. Plus, it's vegetarian, vegan, and raw vegan approved! This kind of hemp oil is my favorite.)
How Does Hemp Seed Oil Taste?
It does have a flavor to it, much like olive oil does - as in, you will notice the flavor but it is not crazy overpowering.
Hemp oil has a lovely nutty, earthy taste to it that adds a great element to many recipes.

Do you know if hemp oil is ok to use in something like microwaved mug cake? I know you shouldn't really heat it, but I'm not sure how hot it actually gets in 33 seconds of microwave together with other ingredients.

I'd say no, microwaves get pretty hot to heat up food quickly.

My local foodbank had hemp seed oil this week and hemp seed protein powder last week and hemp seeds the week before that, so I've been stocking up while this abundance lasts. Foodstamps don't cover any form of hemp because the government is a butt-face, so this is a great opportunity for me to try new, expensive things. I usually just take 2 capsules of 1000 mg each hemp seed oil for my chronic illness. I'm excited to have these other resources at my disposal. Now I just need to learn how to "cook" with them! So thank you for your very informative post! I haven't known what to do with the oil before except not to heat it and I've been scared to do anything except rub it on my skin. It's as amazing externally for muscle and joint pain as it is internally for memory and concentration. So far I've been eating the seeds on bowls of fresh fruit, cereal, and on my salads. I'm usually not a very healthy eater so I kinda wish there were more junkfood ways to eat hemp so I could take a break from all the raw fruits and veggies. I did find one recipe for a smoothie with cacao nibs and hempseeds and bananas, but that seems to be the closest I can get. I swear on my copy of Decolonize Your Diet that I'll keep eating a good number of these raw fruits and veggies that the hemp recipes are making me eat if I can work in some easier to eat foods too.

Is there a tea drink other than smoothie recipe for the hemp oil
Karissa says
Hemp powder might be better than hemp oil if you'd like to make a tea. I've never personally tried it, but here is a link to hemp powder: https://www.amazon.com/Navitas-Naturals-Organic-Protein-Pouches

I use coconut for all my cooking now, I think I will have to give hemp oil a try for all the recipes that don't require heating. Thanks for sharing this and the recipes!
