Why Make Homemade Seasoning?
I like cooking with a lot of seasoning – and love using homemade seasoning. One of my favorites is this homemade Italian seasoning.
I prefer using homemade seasoning because the store bought ones are usually packed with ingredients that are unhealthy and/or unnecessary. While some of these added ingredients are not necessarily dangerous to our bodies, they don’t need to be there. On the other hand, some added ingredients can be a risk. Store bought seasonings can contain:
- Added sugar
- Added salt
- “Natural flavorings” (um, what are those exactly?)
- Artificial dyes
- Silicon dioxide
- and many other added ingredients
Making it yourself simply ensures that you know what ingredients are going into your food. For a real food foodie, this is so important to me! Plus, you can completely customize the spices to your preference.
I love buying organic spices in bulk, which makes it even easier to make my own seasoning when I need some.
Homemade Italian Seasoning
- 1 Tablespoon of oregano
- 1 Tablespoon marjoram
- 2 Tablespoons parsley
- 2 Tablespoons rosemary
- 2 Tablespoons thyme
- 2 Tablespoons garlic powder
- 1 Tablespoon onion powder
- 2 teaspoons sage
Measure out ingredients and put into your jar of choice (a recycled glass spice jar is a great way to reduce and reuse). Shake it up, store it in your pantry, and use when desired!
